Below are some of the quality control tests performed at A&P Auto Parts.

Visual: 100% visual inspection, sorting and grading of core during tear down

Crack Detection: 100% magnaflux inspection of all block and all cast iron cylinder heads.

Air Gauging:

  • Heads – 100% gauging of valve guides on all engines. 100% gauging of lifter bores, and cam bores on all OHC engines.
  • Crankshafts – 100% gauging of all rod and main bearing journals diameters.
  • Connecting Rods – 100% gauged for: Bearing and pin bore diameters, center to center dimensions to measure rod stretch, rod bend and/or twist.
  • Block – 100% gauging of all cylinder bores for diameter and roundness after final honing operation.

Dial Bore Gauging: All crank main bearing bores and all cylinder bores on engine block measured for diameter and distortion.

Vacuum Decay Testing: All head and valve assemblies on cylinder head are quantified for leakage using a vacuum decay process.

Pressure Decay Testing of long block assemblies:

  • Coolant passageways – All engine assemblies quantified for water jacket, head gasket, and casting leakage.
  • Oil passageways – All engine assemblies quantified for oil gallery, gasket, and casting leakage.

Dynamic Engine (Sims) Testing: All engines are cold motored and checked and measured for proper torque to turn, cylinder compression, oil flow, oil pressure, as well as audibly monitored for any unusual noises.

Daily Quality Inspections:

  • Block – 1 block per engine family is laid out and checked for all critical and high impact characteristics as defined in our control plans. These measurements include surface finishes, surface flatness and cylindricity
  • Cylinder Heads – 1 head per engine family is laid out and follows same check process as blocks.

Installation Instructions

At Chuck’s Auto Salvage, we provide you with exceptional remanufactured auto parts AND offer you guidance during the installation of your new car part from Chuck’s. Use the step-by-step tips and checks listed here to ensure you install your new remanufactured auto part right the first time. If you aren’t installing the part yourself, provide your mechanic with this handy installation info.

Before Installing Your Remanufactured Engine …

  • Verify the root cause of the original engine failure.
  • Check engine assembly for shipping damage.
  • Verify the engine ordered and the engine received is correct for the application.
  • Read all warning tags and additional information supplied with the engine.
  • Have shop manual available for torque, timing and other factory specifications.

IMPORTANT: Check your existing auto components before beginning installation.

1) Intake manifold must be thoroughly cleaned and free of all debris. Debris such as old piston, piston ring or valve material can be trapped in the intake, plenum, and EGR system. The debris can and will be pulled into the replacement engine causing the replacement engine to fail. DO NOT GLASS BEAD, SAND BLAST OR USE ANY TYPE OF MEDIA THAT COULD GET LODGED IN THE INTAKE.

2) Installer must DIAGNOSE, REPAIR and INSURE proper operation of engine-related systems and subsytems. Here are some parts linked to the engine’s cooling system that are especially important to check:

  • Fan (motor, wiring, relays, switches or clutch)
  • Hoses
  • Thermostat
  • Water Pump
  • Fuel System
  • Volume and pressure
  • Quality – (sugar, water, debris)
  • Injectors
  • Vacuum Hoses
  • Control – PCV & EGR
  • Catalytic converters – (plugged, leaking or restricted)
  • Air induction – (air cleaner and inlet hoses)
  • Electrical/Electronic systems
  • Starting
  • Charging
  • Ignition
  • Computer Controls
  • All associated wiring, relays and sensors

After Installing Your Remanufactured Engine…
1) Check engine for interference. Rotate the crankshaft by hand a minimum of four complete revolutions before engaging the starter. Nuts, bolts, washers or other small parts that may have been dropped into the intake manifold or intake ports can severely damage replacement engine. If engine cannot be rotated by hand, inspect for foreign objects in combustion chamber.

2) Check Oil Pressure. The oil pump on this engine must be primed and the entire oiling system must be purged of air before the drive belts are installed and the engine is started.

  • The preferred method is to use a pressurized system to push clean oil through the entire oiling system.
  • A distributor type engine can be primed with a priming tool and drill motor to rotate the oil pump shaft. The technician must make sure that oil flows to the top of the engine and into the rocker arms.
  • A distributor-less engine should be primed before the drive belt and spark plugs are installed. First, disable the fuel and ignition systems and crank engine in short durations until oil pressure is achieved. Second, crank engine an additional two minutes in short durations to insure the oiling system is purged of air.
  • Check and adjust oil level after priming and purging is complete.
  • Oil coolers need to be replaced and the cooler lines cleaned of all debris.

3) Check Cooling System

  • Fill to manufacturer’s recommended levels.
  • Fill with proper concentration of manufacturer’s recommended coolant.
  • Air bleed (Many late model cooling systems MUST be air bled or overheating will occur).

4) Readjust Valve Lash

  • Engines equipped with adjustable rocker assemblies must be readjusted after engine “run in”.

5) Replace Oil Cooler

IMPORTANT: Oil cooler MUST be replaced. The Technical Department offers the following information concerning the reuse of oil coolers:

  • Some vehicles are originally equipped with oil coolers which are part of the radiator assembly; others may have aftermarket coolers added to the oiling system.
  • Regardless of design, the OIL COOLER MUST BE REPLACED or the remanufactured engine warranty will be void.
  • Small bearing and crankshaft material cannot be entirely removed by simply flushing the cooler. If this is attempted and the original cooler is REUSED, it will contaminate the engine’s oil system, resulting in multiple engine failures.

Any time you’re installing remanufactured auto parts, you need to work methodically and do your best to get it right the first time. If a mistake is made early on, it could mean hours of excess work. If you’re not comfortable with your mechanical skills, contact your local repair shop and ask if they install remanufactured parts. Search around for the shop with the best deal and experience and request their installation services. When you find a qualified engine installer, provide them with the information here.

Core Return

For engines, transmissions, transfer cases and other remanufactured auto parts, the core return program is designed as a one-for-one exchange program. Customers are required to return the core the same year the remanufactured auto part is purchased from Chuck’s. Also, the amount of cores returned must equal the amount of remanufactured parts purchased.

Return Guidlines:

For 100% Core Credit, core must be …

  • Returned in original packaging
  • Fully assembled and to the same build level as the replacement part provided by Chuck’s
  • Visually remanufacturable
  • Returned with completed CORE RETURN AUTHORIZATION TAG properly attached

For 30% Core Credit…

  • Core must be fully assembled and to the same build level as the replacement part
  • Core may have visible cracks, or broken rods or mains that deem the engine not remanufacturable

NOTE: All cores returned must be properly identified as full or partial credit on attached

The core return tag (found inside your engine packet) must be filled in completely and attached to the core with the enclosed wire tie wrap in order to ensure proper credit for the return. Failure to follow these instructions may RESULT IN LOSS OF CORE CREDIT.

Reman Limited Warranty

The Remanufacturer issues this non-transferable Limited Warranty to the original purchaser/owner of the vehicle in which the engine or component is installed. The Remanufacturer warrants the reman engine or component part, which was purchased and is described in this warranty to be free from defects in materials or workmanship if properly installed and maintained during the specified warranty period. If the reman engine or component fails due to a defect in materials or workmanship during the specified warranty period, the Remanufacturer will repair, replace or refund, at the discretion of the Remanufacturer, the engine or component in question.

Long Blocks-Whichever shall occur first:

  • 36 Months/100,000 Miles: Passenger Cars, Police Cars and Light Trucks up to 3% ton except motor homes* and special use vehicles* listed below. This warranty covers parts and labor as described in Remanufacturer’s Limited Warranty for a period of 36 Months/100,000 Miles.
  • 24 Months/24,000 Miles: Trucks 1 ton and over except motor homes* and special use vehicles* listed below. This warranty covers parts and labor as described in Remanufacturer’s Limited Warranty.
  • 12 Months/12,000 Miles: All Taxi cabs, Ford Mustang Cobra, GT, Ford F-150 Lightning and Harley Davidson Pickups Equipped With A Supercharger. This warranty covers parts and labor as described in Remanufacturer’s Limited Warranty.
  • 3 Months: Stationary, agricultural and industrial. This warranty covers parts and labor as described in Remanufacturer’s Limited Warranty.
  • 12 Months: Marine Applications. This warranty covers parts and labor as described in Remanufacturer’s Limited Warranty.

Reman Warranty Policy

Reman Return Procedure – What to do if you have a problem with your remanufactured unit.

The customer should call the installing shop FIRST and have them contact the Warranty Department. BEFORE any warranty work is done the installation facility must have a claim number. Any repairs that are not authorized will not be considered for reimbursement and may void the warranty. The installing shop should call 877-877-6699 and have the following information ready:

  • The serial number of the unit along with the year, make, model & VIN.
  • The current mileage and mileage at the time of installation.
  • A complete description of the problem including symptoms, codes, and all diagnostics performed.
  • Note: we may require further diagnostic testing in order to identify the source of the problem.
  • All parts must be returned to the factory for inspection. Call 877-877-6699 and we will issue a call tag for the parts/unit. Additionally, the parts/unit MUST be tagged with the warranty authorization number.
  • All warranty units MUST include the return of the inline filter.
  • Labor bills must be submitted in writing within 30 days after the repair. The claim number MUST BE on the face of the bill. Bills may be sent via fax to 484-388-5080. The Warranty Administration may authorize a repair or replacement unit if deemed necessary. A warranty claim will be created and the warranty authorization number will be communicated to the repairing shop. If the engine is replaced the warranty authorization number must be written in the space provided on the Orange Warranty Claim Tag and attached to the unit prior to return. Failure to do so may result in a significant delay in the processing of the claim or the unit being processed for core credit only (See following page for warranty claim tag information). Any credits or payments made in accordance with the warranty policy will be issued to the installation facility.

Limited Warranty Claims and Payment Policy on Reman

Approval for repairs or replacements of reman engines or components must be obtained from the customer service department prior to any work being performed. Any repairs or replacements performed without prior approval will not be covered. When calling the customer service department please have the following information:

  • Serial number of the engine.
  • Part number of engine or component.
  • Date and mileage at the time of installation.
  • Current mileage.
  • Make, model, year, vehicle identification number and license plate number.
  • Description of problem that you are having with the reman engine or component.

Diagnostic time will only be covered if instructed by the customer service department. Reman engines, components or parts found to be defective must be returned to the Remanufacturer for failure analysis or claim will be denied.

Any remanufactured engines, components, or repair parts must be submitted with appropriate paperwork and authorization number to insure payment.

Paperwork and information required:

  • Original sales ticket and repair order.
  • Current sales ticket and repair order.
  • Sales tickets for any parts purchased to complete repairs or replacements.
  • All service and maintenance records.
  • Warranty Authorization number.

Please retain a copy of the paperwork and authorization for future reference.


Labor Rates:

Independent Repair Shops and Fleets: Current Motor or All Data time not to exceed $75.00 per flat rate hour.*

Over the counter sales Installed by Vehicle Owners: Current Motor or All Data customer pay time. To be paid at $25.00 per flat rate hour, not to exceed $400.00.*

*All parts and labor payments subject to approval upon inspection of remanufactured engine, component, or parts by the Remanufacturer.
